The delicate 2021, the richly concentrated 2022 with its rounded fruit, and, naturally, the 2023 is different from both. It is precise and profound. For a Cossard red, it may be an exception—perhaps a style that requires several years of aging.

Come to think of it, the 2023 Vosne-Romanée may be the same. In December 2025, we commented, “Please let it settle for a few months before drinking,” but that was simply to allow the wine to recover from the fatigue of its voyage; its true peak as a classic Bourgogne will likely come several years down the line. We had the opportunity to taste the 2019 Vosne-Romanée in June 2026 and the 2017 Chambolle-Musigny in March 2026, and both embodied the quintessence of Grand Vin de Bourgogne.

The 2023 Chambolle-Musigny has already settled and is approachable now. Try it, and see if you can anticipate how many years it will take to reach its optimal drinking window.

Frédéric Cossard sometimes presents highly individual interpretations of grape varieties and terroirs in his VdF series that go beyond conventional understanding. In appellations such as Vosne-Romanée and Chambolle-Musigny, however, he produces classic wines that remain faithful to the character of the terroir and bring out its uniqueness to the fullest. (Even here, he uses egg-shaped cement tanks for élevage, of course to avoid masking the flavour of Pinot Noir with oak. This point differs from the traditional methods of Burgundy wine making.)
