Nicolas Joly

Nicolas Joly’s La Coulée de Serrant is one of the finest biodynamic vineyards in the world. It has long fascinated legendary producers such as Lalou Bize-Leroy and the late Anne-Claude Leflaive. As a single-vineyard Monopole AOC, Coulée de Serrant belongs to an elite, rare tier of French winemaking, comparable only to icons like Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Château Grillet. This unique estate produces an extraordinary wine crafted from 100% Chenin Blanc, harvested in multiple passes to capture the complex influence of botrytis.

Nicolas Joly initiated his conversion to biodynamic farming in 1980. Around 1985 or 1986 (according to his memory), Lalou Bize-Leroy visited the estate and understood its philosophy instantly. This pivotal encounter inspired her to completely eliminate chemical inputs and implement biodynamics at her own prestigious Domaine Leroy (the first vintage was 1988). Shortly thereafter, in the late 1980s, Anne-Claude Leflaive visited Coulée de Serrant and was similarly moved—and, as they say, the rest is history. Many of today’s most celebrated, biodynamic wines simply would not exist without Nicolas Joly’s tireless pursuit of truth. Following over 40 years of rigorous biodynamic management, the vineyard is perfectly primed to mirror its terroir. Today, this legendary Monopole is operating at its maximum potential.

While standing among the vines allows you to feel the deep energy and resonance of the land, you do not need to travel to France to experience it. Every element of this exceptional site is cleanly transferred into three signature labels—Coulée de Serrant, Clos de la Bergerie, and Les Vieux Clos—and delivered straight to your glass. Ultimately, tasting the wine is what truly matters.
