In the late 1960s, while attending the University of California at Davis, Christian Moueix fell in love with the Napa Valley and its wines. Son of Jean-Pierre Moueix, the famed wine merchant and producer from Libourne, France (Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix), Moueix returned home in 1970 to manage the family vineyards, including Châteaux Pétrus, La Fleur-Pétrus, Trotanoy in Pomerol, and Magdelaine in Saint-Émilion.

His love of Napa Valley lingered, and in 1981, he discovered the historic Napanook Vineyard, a 124-acre site west of Yountville that had been the source of fruit for some of the finest Napa Valley wines of the 1940s and 1950s. In 1982, Moueix entered into a partnership to develop the vineyard, and in 1995, became its sole owner. He chose the name ‘Dominus’—or ‘Lord of the Estate’ in Latin—to underscore his longstanding commitment to stewardship of the land.

In 1997, the estate unveiled its landmark winery designed by renowned Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. The innovative building utilizes wire gabions filled with local basalt rocks, creating a structure that integrates flawlessly into the landscape while providing natural temperature control ideal for aging wine.

Under Moueix’s leadership and Director of Winemaking Tod Mostero, Dominus has become a pioneer in dry-farming and ecological viticulture in Napa Valley. The estate continues to garner global critical acclaim, with recent vintages—such as the highly sought-after 2021 vintage—earning perfect 100-point scores from premier wine critics.

In August 2025, Dominus marked a historic milestone by acquiring the neighboring 86-acre Yountville Ranch Vineyard. This landmark transaction carries immense historical significance, effectively reuniting two premier parcels that were once part of the same original estate granted to Napa pioneer George Yount in 1836. By bringing this historic land back under unified stewardship and nearly doubling its footprint, Dominus has further cemented its legacy and dedication to the unique terroir of the Yountville AVA.

Beyond the expansion of Dominus Estate, Christian Moueix’s profound impact on Napa Valley is also embodied in Ulysses Vineyard, his second major California project established in 2008. Situated along the prestigious Oakville bench just north of Dominus, this historic 34-acre estate is dedicated to crafting a distinct, pure expression of Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. Mirroring the same strict dry-farming principles and minimalist philosophy as Dominus, Ulysses has rapidly risen to become a celebrated cult icon in its own right.

Jean-Pierre Moueix

Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix (JPM) is a prominent Bordeaux négociant house founded by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1937 and situated in Libourne. Jean-Pierre Moueix retired in 1978 and passed away in 2003. In 1991, his son Christian Moueix became president of JPM. Today, leadership seamlessly bridges the second and third generations, as Christian's son, Edouard Moueix, joined the firm in 2003 and now serves as Managing Director.

JPM is highly respected among wine professionals as a Right Bank specialist. Top châteaux, such as Château Lafleur and Château Gazin, are distributed either exclusively or predominantly by JPM. In addition, JPM owns and produces several iconic properties, including Château Trotanoy, Château La Fleur-Pétrus, Château HosannaChâteau Latour à Pomerol, and Château Lagrange à Pomerol. Under Edouard's direction, the family has significantly expanded its Saint-Émilion footprint, acquiring Château Bélair-Monange (1er Grand Cru Classé) in 2008 and Clos La Madeleine in 2017. In June 2023, they unveiled a monumental new cellar at Bélair-Monange designed by the world-renowned architects Herzog & de Meuron.

Their older vintages hold a premium value because JPM stores all its inventory in perfect conditions within its Libourne cellars. These library wines are released strategically after several years—and sometimes even decades. Consequently, securing a direct allocation from JPM is widely considered the best way to purchase aged Right Bank wines. While traditionally rooted in Bordeaux, the company has also expanded its luxury merchant portfolio internationally, securing high-profile global distribution partnerships like Australia's cult icon Giaconda Chardonnay.

Château Pétrus was managed by Christian Moueix starting in 1970, but in 2008, he announced his intention to step back from its daily operations, limiting his role to that of a consultant.

Christian Moueix also owns vineyards in Napa Valley, California, most notably Dominus Estate and Ulysses Vineyard, both globally recognized among California’s finest cult estates.
