Frédéric Cossard - Grand Vin de Bourgogne

Frédéric Cossard established Domaine de Chassorney in 1996 after ten years of experience as a wine merchant. Today, he is widely recognized as a pioneering Burgundy natural winemaker.

Cossard manages his vineyards using "homeopathic farming," a self-developed agricultural method that integrates the principles of homeopathy and biodynamics. In the cellar, he avoids SO2 and all synthetic chemical inputs to ensure a entirely natural vinification process. This precise combination of intuition and technical skill yields exceptionally pure expressions of terroir. "Wine is solar energy transformed through the vine and the terroir," says Frédéric Cossard, an advocate for Vin Vivant who crafts wines bursting with life.

Indeed, if we trace back the life energy that drives humans, animals, and plants on Earth, its ultimate source is solar energy. To drink wine is to drink solar energy. Therefore, it is no wonder that Frédéric Cossard’s wines—consciously crafted with this clear vision in mind—overflow with an unparalleled sense of life and dynamism.

As a side note—yet an important one—Although Frédéric Cossard is a pioneer of natural wine in Burgundy and played a key role in its rise to a global movement, they gently stated in a letter to international importers a few years ago that they do not wish to be grouped under the current, trendy umbrella of what is called 'natural wine' today.

Operating as a micro-négoce, Cossard sources high-quality grapes through close, long-term relationships with select growers. His discerning eye allows him to produce natural expressions across legendary Burgundy appellations, including Vosne-Romanée, Nuits-Saint-Georges, Morey-Saint-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet, and Beaune. He also crafts wines from fruit sourced in neighboring regions like the Jura, Côtes du Rhône, and Beaujolais, maintaining a level of quality that matches classic appellation of Burgundy.

Cossard directly owned and managed estate vineyards in Saint-Romain, Volnay, Savigny-lès-Beaune, and the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune for nearly thirty years, establishing them as benchmark properties within those appellations.

In 2018, looking toward future expansions and new winemaking developments, Frédéric Cossard appointed his long-time friend Aurélien Verdet as the successor at Domaine de Chassorney. Together, they produced wine over a three-year transition period, making the 2022 vintage the first official release under Verdet’s solo leadership. Far from retiring, Cossard has actively continued his winemaking journey, acquiring new estate vineyards with the 2025 vintage.
