Champagne Etienne Calsac

Based in Avize, a prestigious village in the Côte des Blancs, Etienne Calsac is one of the most exciting young growers (Récoltant-Manipulant) in modern Champagne.

Since taking over his grandparents' vineyards in 2010, Calsac has transformed the family estate by championing organic viticulture, biodiversity, and minimal intervention in the cellar. He meticulously tends to 2.8 hectares of old vines spread across prime terroirs in Avize, Grauves, and Bisseuil. Utilizing indigenous yeasts, barrel fermentation, and low dosages, Calsac crafts champagnes that are praised for their crystalline purity, laser-like minerality, and vibrant energy.

Val l'Hermite Blanc de Noirs

While Étienne Calsac is widely celebrated for his crystalline Blanc de Blancs from the Côte des Blancs, Val l'Hermite represents a thrilling and experimental departure from his signature style. This rare single-vineyard (lieu-dit) Champagne is a 100% Pinot Noir, sourced from a south-facing plot in the village of Bligny, located in the southern Aube district (Côte des Bars).

Characterized by its unique Kimmeridgian marl soils packed with small stones, this specific terroir infuses the wine with a vinous strength and multi-layered depth that beautifully contrasts with Calsac’s chalk-driven Chardonnays.

Vinification and Tasting ProfileTo respect the purity of the fruit, the wine is fermented and aged for seven months in oak barrels before undergoing secondary fermentation with a natural cork stopper. It is aged for a minimum of 24 months on the lees and finished with little to no dosage (typically Brut Nature).

In the glass, Val l'Hermite reveals a delicate, slightly pinkish hue and bursts with a flamboyant bouquet of wild strawberries, mirabelle plums, orange zest, and sweet spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied, structured, and vinous, yet underpinned by a succulent acidity and a perfumed, expansive finish.
