[A307] Abekan Kame-no-o 阿部勘 純米吟醸 亀の尾 阿部勘酒造 宮城県 720ml
It has been a while, but Kame-no-o Junmai-Ginjo is back in stock—possibly for the final time. Abekan Shuzō is planning a full renewal of the series, including a significant overhaul of the lineup. While they are expected to continue brewing sake using Kame-no-o rice, both the label and flavor profile will likely change.
This latest lot is superb—quite possibly the best yet. It offers a soft, elegant clarity, with a subtle bitterness that enhances its refreshing character.
Kame-no-o
Kame-no-o is a historical rice variety used for both sake brewing and eating. In 1893, a farmer named Kameji Abe discovered three ears of rice that had successfully ripened while the rest of the indigenous Sōbewase crop was destroyed by cold weather. He spent several years multiplying and refining the strain. After sharing it with his neighbors, Kame-no-o became highly popular across northern Japan for several decades. Eventually, newer improved varieties took over, and Kame-no-o completely disappeared by the 1970s. However, it was meticulously revived in the 1980s. Since its comeback, Kame-no-o has regained deep recognition as a rare, premium sake rice.
