Barolo with No Barrique

The wine of Bartolo Mascarello is a living legend in Barolo. For three generations—Giulio, Bartolo (1927–2005), and Maria Teresa—nothing has changed in their winemaking process and philosophy. Wines are fermented in concrete vats and vinified in botti (large, old barrels made of traditional oak and chestnut) without modern temperature control systems, and they never use barriques. Their single Barolo is a masterclass in blending four great vineyards: Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Rué, and Rocche di la Morra (officially known as Rocche dell'Annunziata). 

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, international and Italian wine journalism began to criticize traditional Barolos, instead promoting modern single-vineyard wines that featured dark colors and vanilla-coffee flavors derived from aging in new barriques. Bartolo Mascarello never wavered, enthusiastically defending the old traditions of Barolo making.

Today, Bartolo's daughter, Maria Teresa, runs the winery, faithfully preserving her father’s legendary traditional methods.
