Blessed by favorable weather, the 2019 vintage stands as a brilliant culmination of their decade-long experience. Starting with the 2020 vintage, Chanterêves introduced a renewed label design, signaling their entry into a new decade with fresh determination.\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eAbove all, when discussing Chanterêves today, Aligoté is absolutely indispensable. \"Bourgogne Aligoté Les Chagniots 2017\" was the very first domaine wine produced by Chanterêves. Since then, they have expanded their vineyards, and from 2020 onward, they have been crafting five distinct cuvées, each highlighting a specific lieu-dit. Today, their reputation is such that they are considered among the very finest Aligoté producers in Burgundy.\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThey work closely with growers to obtain ideal grapes—often working in the vineyards themselves—with a strong preference for organically farmed fruit. For Chardonnay it was imperative just as in the preceding years to to get on with the harvest quickly. Pinot noir required discerning eye to pick the right dates of harvest. It needn’t wait too long otherwise not only the sugar would increase but would concentrate too quickly which meant jeopardizing balance and elegance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFermentation with indigenous yeasts for both colors went agreeably smoothly. Good amount of natural yeast population assured moderately fast and clean fermentation. 2019 is an exciting millésime not only for the reds but also for the whites. (Granted, in the past, it was common for Chardonnay and Aligoté—and sometimes Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris—to be co-planted within the same vineyard in Burgundy, but this was intended for casual field-blend wines.)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhile there are rare instances where red and white wines are produced from the same lieu-dit—such as Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé’s Musigny Grand Cru or Domaine Chandon de Briailles’s Île des Vergelesses Premier Cru—the points of comparison between a red and a white are entirely different. On that point, Chanterêves’s Mainbey and Les Monts de Fussey each offer two different white wines, making it much easier to spot the commonalities and contrasts.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003e2023 Mainbey – Aligoté\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is more to the story regarding the 2023 vintage. The Mainbey that arrived this time is a special version called “Élevage Prolongé,” which spent a full 22 months in barrel aging (compared to the usual 12 months or so). The label design is also slightly different. Among the Aligoté Lieux-Dits Series, Mainbey is a cuvée defined by its striking acidity and minerality. Right after release, some might find it a bit sharp or edgy. However, thanks to the extended aging period, this version feels beautifully integrated, transforming that initial sharpness into a sleek, glossy elegance. Tomoko \u0026amp; Guillaume might have anticipated these unique characteristics of the lieu-dit when they decided to attempt this Élevage Prolongé.
