Because millésime 2018 brought abundant fruit, this was more or less expected but compounded by the frost and the dry summer (less juice and more solids). The harvest proceeded under excellent weather. Grapes, though little in quantity, were pretty with frequent millerandage. For Chardonnay it was imperative just as in the preceding years to to get on with the harvest quickly. Pinot noir required discerning eye to pick the right dates of harvest. It needn’t wait too long otherwise not only the sugar would increase but would concentrate too quickly which meant jeopardizing balance and elegance.

Fermentation with indigenous yeasts for both colors went agreeably smoothly. Good amount of natural yeast population assured moderately fast and clean fermentation. 2019 is an exciting millésime not only for the reds but also for the whites. There is energy and poise, complexity and density. The reds are also remarkably detailed, balanced and elegant. We must say it is our most favorite vintage of reds to date.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0825/9728/2020/files/chantereves_arigote_chagniots_2019_mg_01_735x735_00bd4c2c-223a-4f68-943a-b9dc3183f875.jpg?v=1783242873
b393-domaine-de-chassorney-aurelien-verdet-saint-romain-rouge-sous-la-velle-2023-1500ml
[B393] DOMAINE DE CHASSORNEY (AURELIEN VERDET) SAINT ROMAIN ROUGE SOUS LA VELLE 2023 1500ml

The 2023 vintage wines from Domaine de Chassorney each have their own highlights and are all enjoyable, but this Sous la Velle stands out as quite a masterpiece among the series.

Sous la Velle is located 380m above sea level, right next to Sous Roche. It has a reticent bouquet at first, but it soon opens up with layers of blackberry, raspberry coulis, orange sorbet and floral aromas. This is beautifully defined and intellectual, a Saint Emilion with aromatic secrets that will only be revealed with bottle age. The palate is medium-bodied with quite sturdy tannin. There is a firm backbone to this Belair-Monange, a serious Saint Emilion, complex and intellectual with precise red and black fruit, a touch of spice and a dash of white pepper on the finish. Dare I say, it represents the first Belair-Monange that ranks among JP Moueix's finest wines since the family acquired the property in 2011. RP95-97

This perhaps somewhat controversial marriage between the estates of Chateau Belair and Chateau Magdelaine—both Premier Grand Cru Classé Saint-Emilion estates—to form Chateau Bélair Monange hits pay-dirt with this spectacular 2015 release. Composed of 88% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Franc, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Belair Monange has the most singular nose of grilled meats, smoked game, iron ore and fallen leaves over a slowly unfurling ripe fruit core of crushed black plums, blackberry preserves and cassis with fragrant touches of star anise and potpourri. Full-bodied, rich and opulent in the mouth, the palate reveals an arresting backbone of exquisitely ripe, very firm tannins and sparks of background acidity lifting and defining the rich, densely packed layers, culminating in an epically long and multifaceted finish. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin. It is less exuberant and voluptuous in style compared to recent vintage, but there is more weight and presence than say, the Certan-de-May, with quite long, lightly spiced, structured finish. Perhaps this Hosanna is atypically "serious" in style, but it should offer 15 to 20 years' drinking pleasure. RP90-92

The 2014 Hosanna followed the 2014 Latour-à-Pomerol at my tasting at J-P Moueix. To be frank, it did not quite possess the same breeding and precision as that wine, veering more towards red rather than black fruit, crushed strawberry and mulberry, tinged with clove and bay leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin and impressive fruit concentration. Here is the real quality: a structured and quite masculine Hosanna, albeit with genuine complexity, allspice and clove intermixed with dusky black fruit and freshly cracked black pepper. This is also a truly unique wine, just like his other cuvées. It is the only red wine by Sébastien Riffault, made from Pinot Noir with noble rot.

The vineyard faces south and is situated on a steep slope with a 30% incline, and the soil is argilo-calcaire, a clay-limestone soil called caillottes. Here again, to protect the ecosystem of microorganisms and the softness of the soil, the vineyard is plowed in a traditional way using horses instead of tractors. From plots with an average vine age of over 40 years, the harvest is delayed to the absolute limit compared to normal Pinot Noir, and the grapes are hand-picked at a ratio of 60% fully ripe grapes and 40% botrytized grapes—a proportion unthinkable for a red wine.

The basics of the vinification method are whole-cluster fermentation, maceration, and no added SO2, but the choice of barrels or stainless steel tanks and the period of élevage seem to change flexibly depending on the vintage to counter volatile acidity. At the time of bottling, like his other cuvées, it is completely without added SO2, unfiltered, and unfined.

Immediately after release, it comes with a slight turbidity derived from the non-filter, but it increases in transparency as it undergoes bottle aging.

The aroma features vivid red fruit notes of red plum, cranberry, and cherry, layered with dried fig and raisin derived from noble rot. From underneath, complex earthy nuances typical of matured Pinot Noir, such as mushroom, forest floor, cinnamon, and clove, are superimposed.

The attack is soft and has an extract-like feeling, but a small amount of volatile acidity works in a good direction, giving tension to the wine. (Whether one considers brett and volatile acidity as absolute flaws or views them positively as accents if they are moderate varies from person to person, but here we believe it works in a good way.) Its delicate taste and the seeping umami are its charms.

It may be unexpected, but we recommend drinking it kept at a low temperature, or rather, chilled. A small, thin glass is recommended, and decanting should not be done. It is not a wine that opens up over several hours after opening the bottle. It is a wine to admire a momentary, fragile, and transient beauty.

Unlike any Sancerre you have tasted before, but by far the best. Twenty years after his first macerated wines, Gravner launches the XX G, a limited-edition package accompanying the release of the 2017 Ribolla, bottled exclusively in magnum format. Produced in a limited run of 1,200 numbered pieces, the box is designed as a collector's item: it combines oak and plexiglass in a minimalist, rigorous design, built to hold two magnums and six blown-glass bowls (or twelve bowls only) created for Gravner by master glassmaker Massimo Lunardon. The label and box graphics were designed by Ettore Concetti Graphic Opera, while the boxes themselves were produced by two Friulian artisans, Cresj Style and Prefor.

[Presentation by Gravner]

In 2017, twenty years after our first experiments in 1997, we are faced with a particularly challenging vintage. A very hot August, followed a rainy September and October, causes the grapes in the vineyard to rot before they can fully ripen. Through hard work, we manage to save about 15 percent of production - largely thanks to the help of noble rot, which protects and enriches the remaining healthy berries. Careful, grape-by-grape selection yields a highly concentrated and characterful wine - a Ribolla distinctly different from its predecessors.

The resulting 2,904 magnums, the exclusive format for this vintage, are presented in a special oak box. Pinot Blanc, much like Chasselas, is generally known as a white grape variety with a neutral and gentle nature, faithfully reflecting its terroir and the winemaker's intent. The most fascinating part about Pinot Blanc is its genetic background. Pinot Noir is genetically highly unstable and prone to mutation. When Pinot Noir (black) loses its pigment, it becomes Pinot Gris (grey), and a further loss of pigment leads to the final mutation: Pinot Blanc (white).

Because the grapes look so much like Chardonnay, it seems they were often confused and cultivated as Chardonnay in many vineyards around the world until around the 1980s. In contrast to aromatic varieties with intense aromas like Gewürztraminer or Sauvignon Blanc, it is generally considered to have a very mild and approachable character. In terms of palate structure, its acidity is relatively mild and soft compared to Riesling, offering a pleasant roundness and fleshiness on the mouthfeel. This moderate weight and richness are part of what makes it so easy to pair with food.

In France, it is usually used in small amounts for blending in Alsace’s Crémant or in Champagne, though unique exceptions exist, such as Cédric Bouchard’s La Bolorée, which is crafted from 100% Pinot Blanc (called Blanc Vrai in Champagne). Bruno Schueller releases various cuvées made from 100% Pinot Blanc, but every single one of them is completely different from the typical characteristics of the grape described earlier.

In addition to Schueller’s trademark sharp acidity and intense concentration, there is an edgy, pleasant astringency—likely coming from the skins and seeds—and a minerality so vivid you can almost see the crystals. In Schueller's wines, the distinct expression of each grape variety—be it Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, or Chasselas—shines through clearly, yet every cuvée is anchored by that unmistakable "Schueller feel" of unique acidity and concentration.

While this Pinot Blanc H 2017 magnum has spent nearly a decade since harvest, I would estimate it is only about 60% of the way through its development. Part of the reason is probably that it’s a magnum, which slows down the aging process. That said, there is no need to worry, as it is already delicious to drink right now. The Pinot Blanc III KL 2014 (750ml) is also available, and this one is about 80% developed. We are not very familiar with Pinot Blanc 100% wines from other producers, but Bruno Schueller's Pinot Blanc is incredibly long-lived.

>>>Read more about this bottle at the News Archive

>>>Read more stories at the News Archive

Notes: Gerard Schueller’s magnum bottles stand 48 cm tall, so they might not fit into a standard refrigerator or wine cellar due to their height and depth. Believed to have originated around Lake Geneva, it is also cultivated in the Savoie and Alsace regions of France. In Alsace, it seems that Chasselas is almost always used for blending in Edelzwicker, which suggests that a single-varietal Chasselas cuvée might be a true rarity. Frankly speaking, this was our very first time coming across one as well. Since we don't remember ever really drinking a Swiss Chasselas by the bottle either, we don't have much to say about the variety itself, but we can certainly introduce it from the perspective of being one of Bruno Schueller's wines.

The defining characteristic of Chasselas is its neutral and gentle flavor profile. The variety itself possesses very little distinctive aroma or flavor, and because of this, it is known as a grape that faithfully reflects the unique character of its terroir. While it is often crafted into casual wines meant for enjoying a light, youthful freshness, there are also grands vins shaped by the hands of exceptional producers that are capable of aging for ten years or more.

Now, as for this Chasselas crafted by Bruno Schueller, it is a wine that reveals itself as a Schueller creation from the very first sip, characterized by a piercing, razor-sharp acidity and remarkable concentration. It is probably worlds apart from what people expect from a Chasselas. What struck us as slightly different from Schueller’s other wines, however, was the impressive, gentle sweetness of the fruit. As time passes, the fruity and floral elements develop even greater depth and breadth. Since this is a 2017 vintage, it has aged for nearly a decade—a magnificent finish that delivers a sense of fulfillment, almost at its absolute peak. It was only during the latter half of the bottle that we happened to look at the label and were astonished to find that the alcohol content was a mere 10.5%.

>>>Read more about this bottle at the News Archive

>>>Read more stories at the News Archive

Notes: Gerard Schueller’s magnum bottles stand 48 cm tall, so they might not fit into a standard refrigerator or wine cellar due to their height and depth.
