Son of Jean-Pierre Moueix, the famed wine merchant and producer from Libourne, France (Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix), Moueix returned home in 1970 to manage the family vineyards, including Châteaux Pétrus, La Fleur-Pétrus, Trotanoy in Pomerol, and Magdelaine in Saint-Émilion.

His love of Napa Valley lingered, and in 1981, he discovered the historic Napanook Vineyard, a 124-acre site west of Yountville that had been the source of fruit for some of the finest Napa Valley wines of the 1940s and 1950s. In 1982, Moueix entered into a partnership to develop the vineyard, and in 1995, became its sole owner. He chose the name ‘Dominus’—or ‘Lord of the Estate’ in Latin—to underscore his longstanding commitment to stewardship of the land.

In 1997, the estate unveiled its landmark winery designed by renowned Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. This landmark transaction carries immense historical significance, effectively reuniting two premier parcels that were once part of the same original estate granted to Napa pioneer George Yount in 1836. By bringing this historic land back under unified stewardship and nearly doubling its footprint, Dominus has further cemented its legacy and dedication to the unique terroir of the Yountville AVA.

Beyond the expansion of Dominus Estate, Christian Moueix’s profound impact on Napa Valley is also embodied in Ulysses Vineyard, his second major California project established in 2008. Situated along the prestigious Oakville bench just north of Dominus, this historic 34-acre estate is dedicated to crafting a distinct, pure expression of Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon. Mirroring the same strict dry-farming principles and minimalist philosophy as Dominus, Ulysses has rapidly risen to become a celebrated cult icon in its own right.

>>>Read more stories at the News Archive

Dominus Estate produces world-class, Bordeaux-style blends that beautifully marry the rich fruit concentration of Napa Valley with the structure, restraint, and complexity of fine Bordeaux. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers impactful black fruit layers, creating a beguiling sense of richness that is beautifully countered by invigorating freshness and great poise, framed by super ripe, plush tannins and beautiful tension, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note and, finally, lots of mineral sparks. For all that it is at the moment, one cannot help but feel that this 2018 is holding something back. Give it a good five years in bottle, at least, and then get set for what I suspect will be a mind-blowing transformation over the next 30 years+.

"This is an example of a cool ripening vintage," Dominus's technical director, Tod Mostero, said. "It was a late season—everything was late from budbreak onward.
